Ubuntu Woes

Sun Nov 22, 2009 08:22:56 -0700

Grr. I upgraded my laptop from Jaunty to Karmic and nothing but pain ensued. Right now my system is incapable of the following:

Why? I have absolutely no idea. Further, the kernel starts up in some bizarre video mode rather than text mode by default by no volition other than its own, and I have absolutely no idea how to fix it. The sheer volume of things that have changed from Jaunty to Karmic is enough to make me say "SCREW UBUNTU", and indeed, I will be moving to some other more sane platform that doesn't change core system settings like /etc/event.d to something completely different and unnecessary (/etc/init in case you were wondering).

I expect this kind of insanity from a system like RedHat or Gentoo -- not from a system derived from Debian proper. I realize they are focusing heavily upon the speedy release cycle, and they're attempting to push the distro, but honestly, they're violating basic principals of things. As a result, I'm going to have to completely reinstall my laptop's operating system from scratch to repair the damage. This time, I don't think I will be reloading with Ubuntu again -- I'm tired of fighting the upstream ways -- instead, I'll be moving to something like Debian or FreeBSD. I like the fact that the system tried to be modern, but it just seems as though they were reaching out in all directions and making work where there was none to be done and in the end making life harder than it needed to be.
